The Most Beautiful Maine Coon's Colors
Maine Coons are the most adorable cats in North America, whose origins go back centuries. And if they are so famous, it is because they are beautiful and have a reputation for being very smart.
These tall cats with pointed and bushy ears have large, colourful eyes, thick, dense hair and a long fluffy tail.
They are very cute and can be easily distinguished from all other cats.
Because of their assets (beautiful dress provided, balance, colors...), the Maine Coons have participated in many exhibitions and won many competitions.
Since then, Maine cats have become the darlings of North Americans and have made a name for themselves in Europe.
They are even part of many series and films, including Harry Potter.
As a reminder, the Maine Coon cat is very friendly and will quickly become friends with caring people. This personality has made the Maine Coon a favourite that is attracting a lot of attention.
An important characteristic of these cats is their colour, which change from any range between black and white. Their color can be solid, bicolor or multicolor with stripes and spots, making them truly unique.
This giant has so many different colors that making a list becomes difficult.
3 families of colours
For ease of use, they are divided into 3 families of colours, to which we will add some variants (hair effects).
1- The "Solid"
Solids are colours that dominate the coat of the Maine Coon, without stains, stripes or any other combination of colours. Solid colours give the cat a beautiful appearance thanks to the combination of the same colour and its thick, fluffy fur.
Here are the "Solid" colours: red, white, black, cream, blue and shades of blue-grey, brown. The colour will remain uniform and will only have a few shades (hair effects).
Since the Maine Coon breed comes from across the Atlantic, it is more common to use the original term, the "Tabby".
The "Tabby" family of colours is the best known in Maine Coon. It has marks or stripes on the upper fur or undercoat.
Depending on the type of bands present and the colours present on the basis of the bands, different combinations of colours can be found in Maine Coons with the "Tabby".
Depending on the type of scratches, they are divided into four categories:
- Blotched Tabby
- Maquerel Tabby
- The "Spotted Tabby
- Ticked Tabby
2- Particles Colors
In the Maine Coon family "Particles Colors" we will still distinguish two more sub-families! As I told you, the Maine Coons have infinitely varied dresses that will make your cat a truly unique companion:
1: Maine Coon "Bicolored"
Two-coloured cats have the same characteristics as "Tabby" cats but with white breasts and legs. The classifications among them are:
- "Cap and Saddle"
- "Mask and Mandle"
2: Maine Coon "Tricolor"
Commonly known as "turtle scales", the tricolour has a black colour on the base with cream and red spots.
Note that "turtle scales" are only females. If, however, a male was tricoloured, it would be the result of a genetic problem and would then be sterile.
Here again, there are three "tricolour" subcategories of Maine Coon:
- Le Calico: Mostly White with black and red hair
- Torbie: Like the Calico but with "Tabby" tasks. For example: tiger
- Tortie: Has red, black and white colours with possible mixtures of cream or blue spots.
Variations and effects of hair
In Maine Coon, there are no less than 6 hair effects:
- "Solid Marking"
- "Tabby markings"
Here is one of the most beautiful hair effects of the Maine Coon, the "Smoke":
The "Smoke" colour variant corresponds to a cat with a "solid" (plain) colour but with a slightly lighter coat on the undercoat. These Maine Coons are very close to their friends with "Solid" colors, but when you move your hands inside the fur, the undercoat will have a lighter color.
Many "Smoke" cats also have discolorations on the chest, which are visible when the cat sleeps upside down or when he plays!
The 10 Most Beautiful Colors of the Maine Coon!
As you've seen, the Maine Coon's color patterns are absolutely incredible! However, some classic colours are still undeniable and are among the most sought-after.
The most popular colors of the Maine Coons are:
Red Maine Coon
Red Maine Coon are the brightest and most appreciated. This color really stands out from all the other colors.
Plain or with any other combination such as white, patterns, spots or stripes, red is very popular.
Red is the most common colour and the majority of Maine Coons are "Solid" (Solid) or "Bicoloured" red. The colour is similar to a mixture of orange and ginger.
The red Maine Coon most often have a "Tabby" (tiger for example) with white and dark red markings. And if you're looking for a "solid" (plain) red Maine Coon, it's not easy!
The red "Tabby" Maine Coon has golden or copper eyes that go perfectly with the undercoat. The colour of the nose and legs is pink and sometimes red.
Do you know that?
It has been observed that 90% of Maine Red Coons are males! Genetics mean that the predominantly red colour is rarely transmitted to females.
Red is a colour linked to the X chromosome. In a female, the two X chromosomes combine to form a new colour. In a male cat, the Y chromosome gives no colour. So the X chromosome transmits its red colour to the male.
Black Maine Coon
A black Maine Coon has a dense, black coat from head to toe. There is no red hair, no undercoat color, no scratches and no stains.
The nose is black although the legs may be a little brownish-black. This solid color is very beautiful and elegant. Our eyes can only be caught by this deep black coat, contrasted by golden or brown eyes.
Some have thick black colors with nevertheless, a little greyish on the chest and ear tufts. The undercoat can also be a little greyish, and
that's when we say that the coat has a "Smoke" aspect.
Until the Maine Coon is old enough, it is difficult to know whether it is a "pure black" or a "smoky black" colour. Because smoked cats have a different undercoat colour, smoked black cats seem to look black, at least at first...
I have seen many pet owners think their pet is "solid" (solid) black while it was smoked black. They don't realize it until they meet a breeder.
Have you checked your cat's undercoat?
White Maine Coon
The White Maine Coon is like an angel who came to you. It is the purest color of cats. A solid white with a pinkish effect on the tufts of the nose and ears.
These superb Maine Coons are adorable pets whose colour contrasts with their environment, which makes them really beautiful.
Do you know that?
The colour of white cats is not a colour gene but a masking gene. So this white colour is the result of chance and cannot be transmitted. The breeder must be very wise to breed a solid white Maine Coon because this colour is not passed on from generation to generation.
Cream Maine Coon
Creamy Maine Coons are a bit like white Maine Coons, but with some differences though. The cream Maine Coon can be a "solid" Maine Coon, i.e. with the entire body in a cream colour. Or, it can be combined with other colours such as silver, grey or white.
Most of the time, cream Maine Coons are found with a combination of colors or patterns. The most famous is the "Cream Cameo Tabby" because it gives
shades of silver and blue with a cream background.
These shades do wonders and give this cat a beautiful dress.
Brown Maine Coon
The Brown Maine Coon is similar to all the other cats we find in our neighbourhood. Brown is easily available from any breeder because this very beautiful colour is frequent and easy to obtain naturally.
Brown Maine Coons are available in "solid" (plain) natural colours or in combination with different patterns and shades. Smoked" brown cats with a white undercoat are the most famous of all.
Brown Maine Coons can also be found in many
different colours such as white, silver, cameo or cream.
Cameo Maine Coon
Maine Coon with "Cameo" coat is the combination of a cream base with a touch of red and silver. It has a bright red colour on the upper part of the body with a combination of bright silver on the lower part of the body.
The tail is once again a combination of these two colours, one of which is vibrant and the other white.
Cameo cats' legs are pure white, which makes them even more beautiful. These Maine Coons look more like cats in the Roux family than white or silver cats, but their colours combine perfectly!
Silver Maine Coon
Silver Maine Coons are different from all other cats and breeds and are not easily available from breeders.
Finding a silver color in Maine Coons is difficult and requires a professional breeder.
This color is very different and is sometimes considered a brilliant version of grey cats. Maine Coon Silver can be found with combinations of colors and patterns that are: "silver tabby", "smoky
silver" or "silver cameo". Silver cameo tabby is one of the most famous colours of the Maine Coons.
Blue Maine Coon
Blue Maine Coons are not exactly blue in color but a shade of blue with a touch of silver. These are mostly found in "Solid" (solid) colours.
The color is very beautiful and blends perfectly with mainly golden or green eyes, really divine!
The body and coat have a strong presence of smoky blue colours and although the tufts of the nose and ears may be blue, a shade of blue or white is sometimes observed.
The Maine Blue Coon can be combined with the white either on the chest or on the undercoat. To be honest, I prefer them in solid colors (Solid)!
Blue/Gray Maine Coon
The blue-gray Maine Coon is beautiful, like the blue Maine Coon. It is a mixture of gray in the upper part of the Maine Blue Coon. The gloss is always the same, and even more perfect in "solid" (plain) colours. But you can find it in several combinations of colours.
When combined with other colours, the solid colour loses its shine and the combinations stand out.
Finally, Ear tufts and nose are grey or black in Maine
Black and White Maine Coon
The black and white colors of the Maine Coon are bright and eye-catching. The base colour is black, but the chest and undercoat are white, giving it a completely different appearance from all other Maine Coons.
The colour is quite similar to that of other combined black and white cat breeds, but the characteristics and colours are very visible.
The area from eyes to chest to legs is white. As a result, the part of the front face is black and white, while the part on the side is dense and bright black.
The nose is pink in colour and the legs are mainly white. The eyes vary but are said to be half the color and differ little because of the bright color of the body.
As you now know, there is a very wide variety of Maine Coon colors and many combinations are possible!
So much so that it becomes difficult to choose from this range of colours and patterns.
So, for your Maine Coon, what color would you choose?
